Stags in velvet

Take a trip around our deer park and delight in the wonderful scenery and wildlife Scotland has to offer. On your journey around the park you will see our herd of red deer. Some of our more mature stags have very impressive antlers; they are great to photograph as they stand so proud.

Wander around on foot, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Get some memorable pictures of our highland cattle, who will quite happily pose for the camera while you take pictures. Just off the main track are the chickens and ducks; you might hear the hens celebrating their egg lay for the day with a squawk!

If you don't fancy the mile long walk, we can provide a 4WD pick-up for you to drive around - very popular with the kids!

The road is only suitable for 4WD, so if you have your own, then you are welcome to take it instead.

Cycle of Red Deer:
Mar/Apr - Stags shed their antlers as the new bone grows in
May-Aug - Stags are in velvet, then velvet is rubbed off against tree bark or stones
Sept - Stags are in their prime, ready for rutting
Oct-early Nov - Rutting season starts, dominant stags round up
a "harem" of hinds, constantly fighting off any competition that may try and split up his harem. Stags can exhaust themselves so much from a lack of sleeping and eating, that in extreme cases can die and then another stag becomes dominant
Nov-June - Hinds in calf
June - Hinds give birth to their calves, moving them from the birthing area and keeping them hidden from predators, only going back to feed them. This happens for a few months, until the calf is strong enough to cope on its own.
